DESCRIPTION OF THE SITES

ANDASIBE or PERINET

Small village at half way between Tananarive and Tamatave, PERINET or ANDASIBE in Malagasy is mainly well-known for its national park. This parkis an amalgamation of Analamazaotra special reserve close to the village of Andasibe and Mantadia national park that lies to the north. There is also Analamazoatra forest (administered by Association MITSINJO) opposite the special reserve. In combination, this is now perhaps Madagascar’s number one rainforest reserve, offering close encounters with various lemurs and an opportunity to glimpse some of the island`s highly sought-after rarities. The special reserve remains the place to see and hear the indri Indri, and there are also reintroduced diademed sifaka. Mantadia is also rewarding for diademed sifaka and indri indri, as well as black-and-white ruffed lemurs and four species of ground-roller.

ANDASIBE MANTADIA

National Park Mantadia is a superb example of lowland and mid-altitude rainforest lying between 800m and 1,260m (2,625-4,135 ft.) and covering some 10,000ha. In the valleys, towering buttress-rooted trees rise to 35m. The understories dominated by tree ferns and Pandanus species near watercourses. Orchids and other epiphytes are plentiful. At higher elevations the forest is more stunted and moss and lichen growth is luxuriant. There is little flat ground, with much of the forest steeply inclined. Annual rainfall averages 1,500-2000mm.

ANTSIRABE

Localized in the middle of a fertile plain surrounded by high mountains of 2500 altitude meters, it is at 170 km away from Tananarive, in a comparatively recent volcanic zone. Antsirabe is a thermal station, « the water city» as it is called; it has become a very important economic city, famous for its fresh products and its mineral water, commonly called « Visy gasy ». A small ride in rickshaw along the Independence Avenue, a drive to the semi-precious stones workshop.

Semi-precious stones workshop « At Joseph’s », a very highly specialist in semi-precious stones and samples are exhibited in his workshop,

Handicraftsman can be observed as they are busy in their interesting work.

MORONDAVA, THE SAKALAVA TERRITORY

The Western part of Madagascar is mainly a fertile savannah while travelling southwards we find a drier rather bushy territory with astonishing landscapes. Spectacular limestone promontories called tsingy pile up towards the North, whilst bizarre looking baobabs with immense trunks, that would need several arms of people to stretch them, build fairy tale forests towards the South. The western coast of Madagascar is much drier than the eastern coast. In general, we can say the climate here is dry tropical. During the dry months between May and November it does not rain at all and the temperatures are pleasant (20 to 25°C on average). Between December and April it can rain torrentially or just a couple of showers, depending on the year.

THE ALLEE DES BAOBABS

Baobabs in the region of Menabe are endemic trees “Adansoniagrandidieri” in the dry forest which is the only onesaved from bush fire. The « allée des Baobabs », the magnificent bottle trees 20 km from Morondava, the biggest town of this part of Madagascar, we find all those giants baobabs clustering together at both sides of the road. It is just amazing, especially at dawn.  The “baobab in love” they are interlaced trees.

KIRINDY FOREST

Kirindy is a privately managed forest in one of Madagascar’s most threatened ecosystems: its dry deciduous forests. It is famous for the giant jumping rat, but is also home to seven species of lemur and a number of endemic reptiles. The flora is equally unusual — a number of unique species are found at Kirindy. The forest is also very dry whereas during the rainy season much of the area of flooded and bright green leaves cover most of the plants. Kirindy is not accessible from mid-January to late March due to the rain.

BEMARAHA NATIONAL PARK

This remote and thrilling limestone region is a world Heritage Site covering 152,000ha, the southern half being the national park. It is the second largest protected area on the island. An extensive area of limestone massif has been eroded into Madagascar`s largest and most impressive pinnacle karst (Tsingy).
