DESCRIPTION OF THE SITES

DIEGO SUAREZ

A sea port at the extreme North of Madagascar; as far as its size and its beauty are concerned, this bay holds the second place in the world after that of Rio de Janeiro, but without the buildings. After the Independence Day, this town has remained a French garrison. The French Mission founded there the Libertalia Republic in the XVIIth century. The draught board-like town overlooks the port installations, and in the opposite of the other large town of the country, it is very quiet. The surroundings are very picturesque, with numerous baobabs at some places.

LA MONTAGNE D‘AMBRE (AMBER MOUNTAIN)

It is located 40km away from Diego, a volcanic mountain- range which extends from 850 to 1474 meters high. It is covered with thick wet forest, it is concealing several small crater -lakes , hidden by exuberant vegetation , this place is very rich in fauna and flora; the visitors could find several attractions : a wide range of reptiles, botanical fitted out paths , numerous spectacular waterfalls, crater lakes can be easily observed.

ANKARANA RESERVE

Madagascar is a fascinating country and a spectacular treasure chest of natural beauty, intriguing culture and amazing wildlife that beckons to be discovered and explored. Located to the north of the country and south of the province of Antsiranana, the Ankarana National Park is a wonderland of surprises which includes unusual landscape formations and a high density of wildlife.

Ankarana Special Reserve is located about 108km south of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) and covers an area of 18,220ha.

Explore the extraordinary eroded grey limestone protrusions called tsingy which is truly a dramatic awe-inspiring vision. Stroll along the constructed boardwalks allowing easy passage to the caves and at the same time protecting the fragile rock pinnacles and unique plant life such as ancient Elephant Feet trees. Between the sheer cliffs lies a sunken deciduous forest harbouring rare wildlife and caves of which one is a fairyland of sparkling stalagmites and stalactites. The more fearless explorer can explore the cave crowded with bats or another cave harbouring crocodiles in the network of underground rivers. The natural sunken potholes displaying the forces of nature is also a phenomenal and captivating discovery.

Ankarana may have the highest density of primates of any forest in the world according to Brandt’s Madagascar Wildlife. Visitors may encounter the crowned lemur, Sanford’s brown lemur, Perrier’s black lemur, the northern sportive lemur and dwarf lemurs. A variety of chameleons and leaf-tailed Uroplatus geckos can also be found in the reserve.

NOSY BE

By name of » the Perfumed Island », a mountain of volcanic region, since the arrival at the airport, we are seized by the luxuriant vegetation atmosphere of Ylang ylang, cinnamon and sugar cane. They are cultivated in the whole island. It is covered with numerous mountains where old craters form natural lakes.

HELL VILLE

Chief town of the island, Hell Ville is a small picturesque harbor with its former Arabian commercial offices, its colonial large buildings and its former warehouses, overlooking the Bay where small Comorian boats, pole-balanced pirogues and yachts evolve in the middle of cargo boats. The relics of the French colonization can still be found there.
