Encounter. The population of the island is cosmopolitan and multicultural. However, the Antakarana and the Sakalava are the main ethnic groups living in this region. Coming from the North of Madagascar, Antakarana is the most important group on the island.

In Mahabo is a sacred cemetery where the princes of the royal families rest. The central tomb of Manongarivo contains various burials, including those of Queen Binao Sakalava, who reigned from 1881 to 1921. The small house on the left side is the treasure compartment and contains the personal effects of the deceased. Access is highly regulated; the outfits and rituals to be done beforehand must be respected both for the local population and for visitors. It is forbidden to go there on certain days of the week. It is essential to inquire before going there.
A women’s association, the Ravinala Association, was created to preserve the heritage of Nosy Be. The women of the village of Marodoka have created an association to preserve the culture and heritage of the Sakalava people. They used to get together to embroider but ended up diversifying their activities when they became aware of the cultural and historical value of their village. They are thus committed to promoting local traditions and developing cultural ecotourism.
