DESCRIPTION OF THE SITES

MORONDAVA, THE SAKALAVA TERRITORY

The western part of Madagascar is mainly a fertile savannah, and as you travel southwards, you encounter a drier, bushy territory with astonishing landscapes. Spectacular limestone promontories called tsingy rise toward the north, while bizarre-looking baobabs with immense trunks, so large that several people would be needed to encircle them, form fairy tale forests towards the south. The western coast of Madagascar is much drier than the eastern coast. The climate here is primarily dry tropical. During the dry months between May and November, there is little to no rainfall, and the temperatures remain pleasant (ranging from 20 to 25°C on average). Between December and April, rainfall can be torrential or just a few showers, depending on the year.

THE ALLEE DES BAOBABS

The Baobabs in the Menabe region are endemic trees (Adansonia grandidieri) found in the dry forest, the only species that have survived bushfires. The « Allée des Baobabs » is a magnificent collection of bottle trees, located about 20 km from Morondava, the largest town in this part of Madagascar. Here, you’ll find these giant baobabs lining both sides of the road, creating a stunning spectacle, especially at dawn. One notable feature is the « Baobab in love », where two baobabs are interlaced, creating a beautiful and unique scene.

RANOHIRA

Ranohira is a small village located at the edge of the Isalo mountain range, and serves as the base for exploring the area. The Isalo National Park, known for its magnificent rock formations, offers numerous excursions, often suited for more experienced hikers.

  • Piscine naturelle de l’Isalo: A one-hour walk in the heat leads to a magical natural swimming pool fed by a small waterfall, surrounded by pandanus trees—an idyllic final stop after a trek through a breathtaking landscape.
  • Window of Isalo: An exceptional viewpoint that offers a panoramic view of the Isalo range, especially stunning at sunset—perfect for photography enthusiasts.

BEMARAHA NATIONAL PARK

The Bemaraha National Park is a remote and thrilling limestone region that covers 152,000 ha, with the southern half designated as the national park. It is the second-largest protected area on the island and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The extensive area of limestone massifs has been eroded into Madagascar’s largest and most impressive pinnacle karst, known as Tsingy. This fascinating landscape is filled with sharp peaks, caves, and rivers, making it a unique and exciting destination for adventurous travelers.
